Everything you need to know about microneedling treatment at Renton Skin Care.
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive treatment that uses tiny, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These micro-channels trigger your body's natural wound healing response, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.
As your skin heals, it becomes firmer, smoother, and more youthful-looking. The micro-channels also allow skincare products to penetrate deeper into the skin, making them more effective.
Most adults in good general health are excellent candidates for microneedling. You may be a good candidate if you want to address:
During your consultation, we'll assess your skin and discuss whether microneedling is the best treatment for your specific concerns.
Microneedling is versatile and effectively treats many skin concerns:
Yes! Microneedling is one of the most effective treatments for acne scars. The controlled micro-injuries break down old scar tissue while stimulating new collagen production. Over a series of treatments, acne scars become significantly less visible as the skin remodels itself.
For best results with acne scarring, we typically recommend a series of 4-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Deep or pitted scars may require additional sessions.
Yes, microneedling is generally safe for all skin tones, including darker skin. Unlike some laser treatments that can cause hyperpigmentation in darker skin, microneedling doesn't use heat or light energy that targets melanin.
However, proper technique and aftercare are crucial. We adjust needle depth and treatment intensity based on your specific skin type and concerns. Following post-treatment instructions carefully is essential to prevent any complications.
We do not recommend microneedling over active acne breakouts, cysts, or pustules. Needling over active lesions can spread bacteria and worsen breakouts.
However, if you have occasional breakouts, we can work around them and treat clear areas. For clients with acne-prone skin, we recommend getting your acne under control first with appropriate facials and skincare, then proceeding with microneedling to address the scarring.

Day of treatment:
Yes, you should stop all retinoid products (including retinol, tretinoin, and adapalene) at least 5-7 days before your microneedling treatment, ideally 2 weeks. Retinoids increase skin sensitivity and can lead to excessive irritation or complications when combined with microneedling.
You can typically resume retinol products 5-7 days after your treatment, once your skin has fully healed.
We do not perform microneedling on pregnant or breastfeeding clients. While microneedling itself is a localized treatment, we prefer to err on the side of caution during pregnancy and nursing.
Additionally, hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect how your skin heals and increase the risk of hyperpigmentation. We recommend waiting until after you've finished breastfeeding to begin microneedling treatments.
Most clients describe microneedling as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. We apply a topical numbing cream 20-30 minutes before treatment, which significantly minimizes discomfort.
During the procedure, you may feel a slight vibrating or scratching sensation. Some areas (like around the nose and forehead) may be more sensitive than others. Most clients find the treatment very tolerable and often compare it to a light sandpaper sensation.
A complete microneedling appointment typically takes about 60 minutes:
Plan to be at our studio for about an hour for your appointment.
Here's what to expect during your microneedling session:
Yes, we always apply a professional-grade topical numbing cream before microneedling. The numbing cream is applied 20-30 minutes before treatment and makes the procedure comfortable for our clients.
If you have concerns about sensitivity, please let us know and we can ensure you're completely comfortable before we begin.
Light pinpoint bleeding is normal and expected during microneedling – it's actually a sign that the treatment is working at the right depth to stimulate collagen production. The bleeding is minimal and stops within minutes.
The amount of bleeding varies based on the needle depth used and individual skin sensitivity. We adjust our technique based on your skin's needs and your comfort level.
Day 1: Skin looks red/pink, similar to a sunburn. May feel warm, tight, or sensitive.
Day 2-3: Redness begins to fade. Skin may feel dry, tight, or slightly rough. Some clients experience minor swelling.
Day 3-5: Possible light flaking or peeling as skin renews. This is normal and means the treatment is working.
Day 5-7: Skin returns to normal. Most clients can resume regular activities and makeup.
Week 2-4: You'll start noticing improvements in texture and glow as new collagen forms.
Month 1-3: Continued improvement in firmness, fine lines, and overall skin quality.
Redness typically lasts 24-72 hours after microneedling. Most clients experience:
Individual healing times vary. Some clients are back to normal by the next morning, while others may have lingering pinkness for a few days.
We recommend avoiding makeup for at least 24-48 hours after microneedling. Your skin has thousands of tiny micro-channels that are open and healing, making it more susceptible to irritation and bacteria from makeup products.
After 48 hours, you can apply mineral makeup if needed. We recommend waiting 72 hours before returning to your full makeup routine. When you do apply makeup, make sure your brushes and sponges are clean.
Results from microneedling develop gradually as your body produces new collagen:
For best results, most clients need a series of 3-4 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart.
The collagen produced from microneedling is your own natural collagen, so results are long-lasting. Most clients enjoy their results for 6-12 months after completing a treatment series.
To maintain optimal results, we recommend maintenance treatments every 6-12 months, along with a good skincare routine and sun protection.
