Getting your first professional facial can feel a little intimidating. What should you expect? How do you know you're in good hands? What if you have sensitive skin? As an esthetician with over 20 years of experience in Renton, WA, I love when new clients come prepared with questions—it shows they're invested in their skincare journey.
Here are the 10 questions I recommend asking before (or during) your first facial appointment.
1. "What are your qualifications and experience?"
Why ask this:
Estheticians should be licensed by the state. Beyond basic licensing, ask about additional training, certifications, and years of experience. This helps you feel confident you're in skilled hands.
What to look for: Valid state license, specialized training (like my Euro Institute certification), and experience with your specific skin concerns.
2. "What facial do you recommend for my skin type and concerns?"
Why ask this:
A good esthetician won't just push their most expensive service. They'll assess your skin and recommend the treatment that will actually benefit you most.
Red flag: If they recommend something without asking about your skin concerns, routine, or goals first.
3. "What does the facial include?"
Why ask this:
Facial names can be vague. "Signature Facial" could mean different things at different spas. Ask specifically what steps are included: cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, masks, massage, etc.
At Renton Skin Care: Our European Facial includes double cleansing, exfoliation, steam, extractions, facial massage, customized mask, and finishing serums—all for $140.
4. "Will you do extractions? How do you perform them?"
Why ask this:
Extractions (removing blackheads and clogged pores) are common but should be done properly. Ask if extractions are included and whether the esthetician uses sterile tools and proper technique.
Good to know: You can always decline extractions if you prefer. Also, some sensitivity after extractions is normal.
5. "What products do you use, and why?"
Why ask this:
Quality products matter. Your esthetician should be able to explain what they're using and why those products work for your skin type. This is also a chance to learn about ingredients.
Bonus: If you have allergies or sensitivities, this is when to mention them so products can be adjusted.
6. "How long will the facial take?"
Why ask this:
Know what to expect so you can plan your schedule. Most facials range from 30 minutes (express) to 90 minutes (luxury). Make sure you won't feel rushed.
Typical times: Express facials: 30 min | Standard facials: 60 min | Comprehensive treatments: 75-90 min
7. "What should I expect during and after the treatment?"
Why ask this:
First-timers are often surprised by sensations during facials (tingling from acids, slight discomfort during extractions). Knowing what's normal helps you relax. Also ask about post-facial effects like temporary redness.
Typical experience: Some tingling is normal with active treatments. Redness after extractions usually fades within a few hours.
8. "What aftercare do you recommend?"
Why ask this:
Your esthetician should provide clear aftercare instructions: what to avoid (sun, retinoids, heavy makeup), how to care for your skin in the following days, and when to schedule your next appointment.
Standard advice: Avoid direct sun, skip heavy workouts for 24 hours, don't use active ingredients (retinol, acids) for 24-48 hours, and keep skin hydrated.
9. "How often should I get facials?"
Why ask this:
A professional can recommend the ideal frequency based on your skin type, concerns, and budget. This helps you plan and set realistic expectations.
General guidelines: Most people benefit from facials every 4-6 weeks. Read my full guide on how often to get facials.
10. "What can I do at home to maintain results?"
Why ask this:
Facials are most effective when supported by a good home routine. Your esthetician can recommend products and habits tailored to your skin. This is where the real partnership begins.
What I tell clients: Consistent cleansing, sun protection, and targeted treatments matter more than expensive products. I'll help you build a realistic routine.
Bonus Questions
Depending on your situation, you might also ask:
- "Do you have experience with [your specific concern]?" — Acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, etc.
- "What's your cancellation policy?" — Good to know upfront
- "Do you offer packages or memberships?" — Can save money if you plan to come regularly
- "Can I see before-and-after photos of your clients?" — For more advanced treatments like microneedling
Questions Your Esthetician Should Ask You
A good esthetician will also ask YOU questions before starting. Expect to be asked about:
- Your current skincare routine
- Any skin conditions or sensitivities
- Allergies (product or otherwise)
- Medications you're taking (some affect skin)
- Recent treatments (peels, lasers, injectables)
- Your skincare goals
If an esthetician doesn't ask any questions before treating you, that's a red flag.
Don't Be Shy!
Remember: there are no stupid questions. Your esthetician wants you to feel comfortable and informed. I'd rather a client ask 20 questions than lie nervously on the table wondering what's happening.
A facial should be relaxing, and feeling confident in your provider is part of that experience.
