Microneedling: What to Expect Before, During & After

Microneedling has become one of the most requested treatments at our Renton studio, and for good reason. This minimally invasive procedure can transform your skin by stimulating your body's natural healing process, leading to smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin.

If you're considering microneedling but feel nervous about what to expect, this comprehensive guide will walk you through every step of the process—from preparation to aftercare and results.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, uses tiny sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These micro-injuries trigger your body's wound healing response, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin—the proteins responsible for firm, youthful skin.

The treatment can effectively address:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Large pores
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Hyperpigmentation and dark spots
  • Stretch marks
  • Overall skin dullness

Before Your Treatment: Preparation

2 Weeks Before

  • Stop using retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and other exfoliating products
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning
  • Discontinue blood-thinning supplements (fish oil, vitamin E) if approved by your doctor

1 Week Before

  • Avoid waxing, threading, or laser hair removal on the treatment area
  • Don't schedule any other facial treatments
  • Stay well-hydrated

Day Of Treatment

  • Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin
  • Avoid caffeine if you're sensitive (it can increase skin sensitivity)
  • Eat a light meal beforehand

💡 Important Note

Please inform me of any skin conditions, allergies, or medications you're taking during your consultation. Some conditions may require us to adjust the treatment or postpone it.

During the Treatment: What Happens

1

Cleansing (5 minutes)

Your skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove any oils, dirt, or bacteria.

2

Numbing (20-30 minutes)

A topical numbing cream is applied and left to take effect. This ensures your comfort during the procedure.

3

Microneedling (20-30 minutes)

The microneedling device is moved across your skin in a systematic pattern. You may feel a slight vibrating sensation and mild pressure.

4

Serum Application (5 minutes)

While your micro-channels are open, we apply a hydrating serum that penetrates deeply for maximum benefit.

5

Soothing Mask (10 minutes)

A calming mask is applied to reduce redness and begin the healing process.

Does It Hurt?

With the numbing cream, most clients describe the sensation as mild discomfort rather than pain—like light sandpaper moving across the skin. The forehead and areas near the nose may be slightly more sensitive, but the discomfort is very manageable.

After Your Treatment: Recovery Timeline

Immediately After

Your skin will look red, similar to a moderate sunburn. This is completely normal and expected. Some clients experience minor swelling, particularly around the eyes.

Day 1-3

  • Redness gradually subsides
  • Skin may feel tight and dry
  • Minor flaking or peeling may begin
  • Keep skin hydrated with gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer

Day 4-7

  • Most visible redness is gone
  • Peeling typically completes
  • Skin starts to look refreshed
  • You can return to normal skincare routine

Week 2-4

  • Collagen production kicks into high gear
  • Skin texture improvements become visible
  • Complexion appears brighter and more even

🚫 What to Avoid After Treatment

For 24-48 hours: Makeup, active skincare ingredients, touching your face, exercise/sweating
For 1 week: Sun exposure, swimming, saunas, retinoids, exfoliants
For 2 weeks: Other facial treatments

Aftercare Essentials

  1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: Use a gentle, hydrating serum and moisturizer multiple times daily
  2. Sunscreen is non-negotiable: Your skin is more sensitive to UV damage. Use SPF 30+ every single day
  3. Sleep on a clean pillowcase: Change it daily for the first few days to prevent bacteria transfer
  4. Be gentle: No rubbing, scrubbing, or picking at your skin
  5. Stay hydrated internally: Drink plenty of water to support healing

When Will I See Results?

While you may notice an immediate "glow" once redness subsides, the real magic happens over time:

  • 1-2 weeks: Brighter, more radiant complexion
  • 4-6 weeks: Improved texture and reduced pore size
  • 2-3 months: Visible reduction in fine lines, scars, and pigmentation
  • 6 months: Full collagen remodeling complete

Most clients see optimal results with a series of 3-4 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Maintenance treatments every 6-12 months help preserve your results.

Is Microneedling Right for You?

Microneedling is safe for most skin types and tones. It's an excellent choice if you want to address aging concerns, scarring, or texture issues without the downtime of more aggressive treatments.

However, microneedling may not be suitable if you:

  • Have active acne, eczema, or rosacea flare-ups
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a history of keloid scarring
  • Are currently using Accutane or have in the past 6 months
